every detail

A few weeks ago we visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park. If you’ve not been, add it to your bucket list. I have no words to describe what it’s like.

As we began the 2.5 mile walk 750 feet under the earth, I was awed by what I was taking in. There was a point about an hour in when I’d taken so many pictures and we had stopped at so many sights that I put my camera in my pocket. The pictures were only a distraction from all that my eyes needed to absorb.

As we finished the tour, this was my takeaway: I realized that I didn’t need to understand the history or comprehend the science of this astonishing wonder – other people had already solved those mysteries. But I did know that no amount of limited human understanding could ever make such a marvel from nothing.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Genesis 1:2 NIV

We, as humans, have no part in the origin of the caverns.

Only God does.

And this applies to the mysteries of our lives as well…

We want to believe that we can carefully construct and create our lives. In reality, while we can make choices, even the ability to make decisions is a privilege granted by God.

We find He is in every detail.

Look around you. Right now His fingerprints are on everything: every ocean wave, every human cell, every passing moment, every traveled mile, every whisper of wind, every single molecule of creation.

My point is this - whether you are looking at Carlsbad Cavern, a grain of sand on the beach, or a butterfly in your backyard, you are seeing God’s hand in His world. No portion is removed from His creativity. No part falls out of His purview.

And so it is with your life. He is there in the grand, in the hushed, in the seemingly inconsequential; in every one of the particulars, because He cares for you and will not abandon you to be tossed about by life.

His care and compassion extend to all creation and you are no exception.

So live into your days with wonder!

Find Him in every detail.
