Lesson 1 from the hive

Yes, you saw it last week: we have bees.

11,000 of them to “bee” exact.

It all began as a dream to one day have a hive or two on this property. That dream has come true and we are so excited to have our little pollinators buzzing around.

One of the things we know for sure about beekeeping is that we started out knowing absolutely NOTHING about beekeeping. And in spite of completing books and endless beekeeping videos, we only seem to fall deeper into our pool of ignorance.

It seems that bees are complicated.

Beekeeping is not like learning how to make a lasagna or change your oil. It's more about becoming a bee whisperer. And no amount of reading and study can prepare you for that.

In fact, our bee mentor (bless him!) said that you cannot be a beekeeper and not believe in our Creator. The hive and its inhabitants are just too complex for anyone to truly understand besides God.

Interesting fact: bees have a life cycle that includes several changing jobs as they get older - over their lifespan of possibly about 6 weeks.

In order to do these very specific tasks, they must all work together, but each stays within the bounds of its current occupation. A nurse bee does not forage and a comb-builder is not processing honey. They each have a job and they are wholly committed to it for the good of the hive.

God has designed us in much the same way.

He has given each of us a specific occupation where we are called to live like Jesus for the good of the world. Our focus must be on what He’s called us to do. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom or a banker or a student. Maybe you’re a pastor or a physicist or a nurse.

Whatever your circumstances, you are exactly where He wants you to live out being faithful to the task.

Comparison with others will always threaten the work we’ve been asked to concentrate on. Someone else may seem to have a more prestigious job or a closer family or a more prominent leadership position in the church - that’s not our concern. We are to thrive where God has specifically called us.

Just like our busy worker bees, we each do our part to benefit the whole.

The bees have caused me to ponder: Where have I been called? Am I focusing on living out my faith within my circumstances?

Maybe you’ll consider that today, too.

This, the first of many lessons from the hive…

Today is a GOOD day!
