Sing it out!

I first discovered my love of camping in Girl Scouts. I looked forward all year to the annual trip to Camp Wayback. Rustic tentalows. Warm sleeping bags. Cooking over a fire. Singing camp songs.

So when I was in college, I applied to be a counselor at Camp Greystone in NC. I couldn’t wait to spend my summer helping young girls learn new skills and enjoy the multitude of outdoor camp activities.

One of the best parts of Greystone was singing at meals. We all learned the songs written specifically about the camp. One was called “It’s Gonna’ Be a Great Day!” We sang it every morning at breakfast - the girls exaggeratedly swaying, building up to shouts of “Greystone will have a great day! Hooray!”

Now we were awake!

I have to admit, it really did start off the day right with Mary’s piano playing and the girls singing and a full, fun day of camp ahead.

It makes me wonder . . . can I still sing myself into a joy-filled day?

I think of the many moving hymns and worship music, old and new, that praise God and joyfully remind us of His faithful promises.

His kindness.

His compassion.

And our calling.

I picture David, the shepherd, king and songwriter, sometimes humming and other times singing aloud as he tended the sheep.

Sing to the Lord a new song;

sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord, praise his name;

proclaim his salvation day after day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

Psalm 96:1-3 NIV

I will sing of your love and justice;

to you, Lord, I will sing praise.

Psalm 101:1: NIV

Bless the Lord, all his works
in all the places where he rules.
My soul, bless the Lord!

Psalm 103:22 CSB

Sing praise… that’s a pretty good way to start out the day, isn’t it?

Maybe this week, if you’re feeling tired or anxious or out of sorts, you could hum or sing or even shout your praise to God. It just might give you the new outlook you’re searching for and an extra boost of joy each morning.

So joyfully proclaim God’s goodness to you!

Sing out your very best song to the Lord!

Today is a GOOD day!
