The Knots

I have a very sweet add-a-pearl necklace that my grandmother started for me when I was a little girl. I always wore it to church, so proud of having a “grown-up necklace.”

There was only one problem: the dainty chain was forever getting in knots. (In fact, there’s one in it now - see picture above!)

This wasn’t easily remedied because the chain was so delicate. My mother would use a straight pen to catch a link and then try to loosen the knot. Much of time, however, we were running late and I wore it as is.

There are many different kinds of knots - good and bad.

The knots of sailors and rock climbers and lumberjacks are essential, providing security and safety.

The knots in our lives, however, may need a bit of attention.

What are the knots in your life?

I have knots in so many areas of my own. Spending time daily praying through these knotted places is my best defense against them worsening - the more knotted, the more I need to pray!

There are plenty of knots that can make us stumble. Sometimes we become entangled in a way of thinking that is not in our or others’ best interests. It could be listening to voices that make us feel insignificant or useless. We may be caught in the trap of constantly comparing ourselves with others.

Often, focusing on the world’s values causes knots - the push and pull of status, money, power, influence. Once tied, breaking free from these is difficult.

Any of these entanglements can stifle the necessary spiritual growth and maturity God desires for us.

And so we turn to our truest Friend and our only hope. Jesus is the great untangler of knots. Working in and through our lives, creating space for growth, walking with us through the unwinding process, He smooths out our souls and sets our priorities aright.

We know we can trust Him with all the entanglements in our lives, exchanging strangling worldly knots for strong and secure ties to Him.

So take a bit of time today to think about the knots you’re grappling with in your life.

Those that are unnecessarily binding you, Jesus can help untangle.

Today is a GOOD day!
